Cub Scout Cake Idea Time

Last year we felt unprepared for the father son cake bake and just threw something together...it was horrible looking! The funny thing was that it won two ribbons...one from the scouts' choice award and one from the scout leaders in the theme area of "Patriotic."

They just made a rectangle cake for a flag. Using white frosting they decorated it with red hots and red sprinkles for the red stripes and twisslers to separate the stripes on the flag. The corner had blue sprinkles. It was messy, but the kids loved it! Many boys told Ryan they voted for it because of the red hots!

This year, although we did well with just winging it last year, I thought we should put some prep into it! Plus I could not think of anything simple which would fit into the scouting theme. We didn't want to do a flag cake two years in a row. Many of the other cakes on the Internet or from last year had fondant and more elaborate decorating. My husband is not into baking and my seven year old is well a seven year old!

Upon looking further we settled on one that looks cool, but should be simple to make. "Should Be" is the operative phrase....

We are doing a dry run this weekend with me teaching Ryan. Then he can help assist his Dad when they do the actual cake.

We have selected this campfire cake from Family Fun (my favorite magazine!) We hope to post pictures soon and then also pics from last year and this year. I don't know about you, but sometimes I need ideas! Here is the picture from the website...
